Oratóir na Nollag

The story of Christmas is told through newly composed music and songs, composed by Colm Ó Foghlú.

There will be a repeat broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta of Colm Ó Foghlú’s Oratóir na Nollag, the first Christmas oratorio written in Irish, this Sunday 6 January at 7.15pm.

Oratóir na Nollag had its world premiere broadcast on Christmas Day on RTÉ RnaG. Featuring Lynn Hilary (soprano), Niamh Ní Charra (concertina), Noreen O’Donoghue (Irish harp), Aoife Ní Bhriain (fiddle) and New Dublin Voices (choir), and accompanied by The Orchestra of Ireland (Ceolfhoireann na hÉireann) led by Fionnuala Hunt, the work is orchestrated and conducted by Liam Bates and recorded and mixed by Brian Masterson. The programme was funded by the BAI Sound and Vision scheme, and Foras na Gaeilge.

Colm Ó Foghlú is originally from Dublin and studied composition under Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. In 1997 he released Echoing and has since composed and directed Gaelforce Dance that toured throughout Australia, Europe, Asia and North America. Other scores include Celtic Dawn: a Fiddle Concerto for Mairéad Nesbitt and the Berne Symphony Orchestra and the soundtrack for The Land of Sex and Sinners (Australian Film Board/TG4). In 2011, Colm was mentor, vocal arranger and music producer for Pitch Perfect on TG4.
