The Listening Machine

Turning Tweets into Music

140 characters to make a piece of music. Your tweets, whether positive or negative, about sports, politics or technologies, can now be turned into music through an online installation by Daniel Jones, Peter Gregson and The Britten Sinfonia. The Listening Machine monitors the tweets of a list of 500 people, who remain unaware they are being monitored. These tweets are analysed in terms of rate, mood, prosody and topic, with each effecting a different element of the music, created from pre-recorded snippets by the Britten Sinfonia

The rate of tweeting is linked to the speed of the music; emotional trends influence its tone, whether positive, negative or neutral; words and phrases generate musical sequences; keywords trigger larger changes within the piece. The music is being constantly generated live, running 24 hours a day non-stop for the length of the installation, from May until October.
