Youth Music Initiative Funding

About the Programme

Creative Scotland administers the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI) programme which intends to:

  • Create access to high quality music making opportunities for young people aged 0 – 25 yrs, particularly for those that would not normally have the chance to participate.
  • Enable young people to achieve their potential in or through music making.
  • Support the development of the youth music sector for the benefit of young people.
  • There are three routes for supporting youth music projects:

    1. School Based Music Making
    Purpose

    To ensure that all school children have access to one year’s free music tuition by the time they reach Primary 6.

    Who Can Apply

    This is a managed fund for Scotland’s 32 local authorities with £8 million being distributed based on a Scottish Government formula funding. Activity supported through this route will commence at the beginning of the academic year - August 2014.     2. Access to Music Making
    Purpose

    To create access to high quality music making opportunities for young people aged 0 – 25 yrs outwith school time. In 2014/15 at least £1.6million is available for Access to Music Making through both open and managed application routes.

    Open funding applications can apply for between £1,000 - £40,000. Managed funding applications will be invited by Creative Scotland for between £1,000 - £100,000.

    This funding route is open to Organisations.

    3. Strengthening Youth Music
    Purpose

    To support individuals, organisations and networks to undertake strategic action or training that will strengthen the youth music sector in Scotland for the benefit of young people. In 2014/15 £200,000 is available for Strengthening Youth Music with support being made available through both open and managed applications to meet the objectives and outcomes of the programme.

    Both Open and Managed funding applications can apply for between £1,000 - £20,000. Managed applications will be invited by Creative Scotland.

    In 2014-15, £50,000 out of the overall £200,000 allocation is available for applications for Training and Continuing Professional Development. This will be managed on behalf of Creative Scotland by the Scottish Music Centre. Full details on how to apply can be found on the Scottish Music Centre’s website.
