Great Music in Irish Houses Festival 2018

6 days, 8 venues and over 20 musical artists

Featuring world-class performances from the classical and chamber music genres in an array of fascinating spaces from the traditional to the eclectic, including Airbnb International Offices, Killruddery House and Dublin Castle, the Great Music in Irish Houses Festival returns from 12th – 17th June, with a line-up of celebrated Irish and international artists.

The 2018 Festival is pushing its own musical boundaries with an exciting lunchtime performance from award-winning young guitarist Sean Shibe with works for electric guitar at the ‘Box in the Docks’.

This year’s opening night sees the Sacconi Quartet collaborate with Irish tenor Robin Tritschler for the Irish première of Jonathan Dove’s haunting In Damascus, a setting of verses by Syrian poet, Ali Safar, relating to the current Syrian situation. Taking place at the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson Street, this concert will also feature quartets by Shostakovich and Haydn.

Audiences will delight in performances featuring works from other illustrious composers including Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Beethoven and Chopin, along with living composers including Édith Canat de ChizyThomas Adès and from Ireland, Ann Cleare, and Ian Wilson.

And we have a winner! The 2018 Festival will present two concerts by of the foremost guitarists of his generation, 26-year-old Sean Shibe from Scotland, who was recently awarded the ‘Young Artist Award’ at the prestigious 2018  Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. From Bach to Pulitzer prize-winning composers David Lang and Julia Wolfe, the acclaimed Shibe will perform the Irish première of his highly-acclaimed softLOUD show, which switches from the acoustic delicacy of ancient Scots music to a frenzy of multi-tracked electric guitar music.

Festival highlights will include Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet, which will be performed by New York-based clarinettist Carol McGonnell and the French Modigliani Quartet, and the French Van Kuijk Quartet, will deliver a programme of music from Debussy and Schubert in the beautiful surrounds of the National Botanic Gardens.

Great Music in Irish Houses 2018 will conclude on Sunday June 17th with the now annual Dublin Musical Saunter, a mini festival-within-the-festival, which this year features four exceptional Dubliners of international acclaim: clarinettist Carol McGonnell, soprano Anna Devin and pianists Dearbhla Collins, and Hugh Tinney, who celebrates his milestone 60th birthday this year.

For 48 years the Great Music in Irish Houses Festival has been an integral part of Ireland’s cultural calendar. It features the crème-de-la-crème of musicians and singers performing in unique venues such as stately Irish houses and iconic landmark structures, as well as a selection of more modern buildings.
