Sokalo Atlantic Rhythms

Sokalo Atlantic Rhythms

Tuesday, 8 September 2015, 8.00pm

A stunning performance of traditional Irish and traditional Canadian Dance.

With its roots in the history of how traditional Irish dance influenced the traditional dance of Canada’s Quebec region as far back as the 18th century, this world premiere will unite Irish and Quebecois dance traditions on stage for the very first time.

After a week-long residency at The Dock, Montreal dance company Zogma will take to the stage with Irish dancers Caitlin Nic Gabhainn, Edwina Guckian and Liam Scanlon, and virtuoso harpist Laoise Kelly, bringing the intoxicating music and urban energy of their production Solako to the rural landscapes of the west of Ireland.

Produced by The Dock and Canada’s Zogma Dance with funding from The Quebec and Canadian Arts councils and an Irish Arts Council Deis Award, Sokalo represents the happiness of reuniting and the joy of shared memories with friends. It is the urban rhythms that modulate to life.

When the urban rhythms in Sokalo meet and intermingle with the rural rhythms of traditional dance and music in Ireland we expect a magical result.
