“There’s no better chamber orchestra in Britain.” Andrew Clements, The Guardian

Royal Northern Sinfonia is the orchestra of the North East of England, based at Sage Gateshead.

It has built a distinctive reputation as a fresh thinking, versatile ensemble, performing repertoire spanning four centuries and regularly commissioning new work. The orchestra’s Music Director is acclaimed pianist and conductor Lars Vogt, with Julian Rachlin as Principal Guest Conductor, and Thomas Zehetmair as Conductor Laureate completing the list of titled artists.

Concerts, broadcasts, recordings, learning & participation projects, and touring, all form part of the orchestra’s busy annual schedule, as do regular chamber music projects for all orchestra members. This season the orchestra toured internationally to France and Brazil. Away from the classical mainstream, Royal Northern Sinfonia has worked with the Pet Shop Boys and Sting, and presented UK tours with John Grant, Ben Folds, Efterklang and Joanna Newsom.

This cross-genre work is typical of the ethos of Royal Northern Sinfonia’s home, Sage Gateshead, a Norman Foster-designed music centre on the banks of the Tyne. Rated by Lorin Maazel among the top five concert halls in the world for its excellent acoustics, Sage Gateshead presents a varied and exciting mix of classical, popular & contemporary and folk performances, as well as hosting one of the largest and most wide-ranging Learning & Participation programmes in the UK.

Currently the following opportunities exist for musicians of outstanding calibre and commitment to join this exceptional orchestra based in Gateshead.
