Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture is renowned for its powerful opening. This counter-balances the powerful symphonic close of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 (Reformation), the heart of the programme. Mendelssohn’s obsession with Bach’s counterpoint inspired Widmann’s own Attempt at a Fugue for Soprano & Orchestra. The ICO and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester have jointly commissioned a world premiere of the re-writing of this work, performed by the ICO with U.S. soprano, Claron McFaddon. Mozart’s C Fugue was first composed for two pianos but re-arranged for strings, with an introductory Adagio reminiscent of a French overture. In Sphinx’s Sayings and Riddle Canons, the particularly playful handling of sonority meets an almost rigid structure as McFadden’s humming alongside the clarinet and knocking sounds of Gilles Vonsattel on piano, become indistinguishable.
