The BBC SSO is seeking an accomplished and experienced Head of Marketing and Communications to join the team of this exceptional orchestra in the vibrant and busy BBC music environment.

This is a one-year post to cover a career break and is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who has a proven track record in music or performing arts marketing, audience development and communications.

Role Responsibility:

  • Senior Management Team: attend and play a full part in discussions at weekly SMT meetings.
  • Staff Management: Manage the Marketing and Communications Team (comprising the Communications Executive and Promotions Assistant)
  • Brand: to manage the development of the BBC SSO brand, refreshed in spring 2018, and ensure brand standards are maintained on all touch points and platforms.
  • Strategy and Campaigns: to develop exciting communications campaigns within the allocated budget for all platforms that promote the BBC SSO’s brand and ensure that sales and audiences are maximised and financial targets achieved. To develop plans for subscription and single-ticket sales across all marketing channels.
  • Design: to work with external design teams create visually exciting materials to promote the BBC SSO’s brand and work and extend reach. 
  • Digital: to manage online activity, including website presence and social media. 
  • Audience Development: to lead strategies for reaching new audiences for the BBC SSO’ work, and to help shape both the marketing and the artistic output.    
  • Business Intelligence: to analyse sales patterns and pacing, campaign results and ticket history to determine and / or change the course of campaign strategies and investment, positively impacting future campaigns.
  • Pricing: Structure pricing strategies to achieve audience growth and maximize long-term income potential.
  • Venue partnerships: to work collaboratively with Glasgow Life (manages of the BBC SSO’s home base and box office) and external venues across Scotland where the orchestra regularly plays on marketing and communications campaigns.
  • Work across the BBC SSO: to co-ordinate with other teams (Artistic Planning and Production, Orchestra Management and Finance) to share information on marketing plans and synchronise plans.
  • BBC Communications Teams: to work collaboratively with BBC communications colleagues in BBC Scotland, BBC Radio 3 and elsewhere in the BBC
  • Concert and events: to attend concerts, learning events, rehearsals, recordings, broadcasts and tours as required.
  • Other duties: to undertake any other reasonable and appropriate duties as a representative of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as may be required on occasion by the Director.
