Couperin 350 Series – 'The noble bass viol' @ NCH Chamber Music Series 2018

Wednesday, 14 November 2018, 7.30pm

Following the 2017/18 NCH Chamber Music Series, the National Concert Hall welcomes a roster of leading Irish and international string quartets, artists and ensembles to perform as part of the ‘NCH Chamber Music Series’ 2018/19.

To mark the 350th anniversary of the birth of French Baroque composer François Couperin on the 10th November 1668, Malcolm Proud has curated a series of three Wednesday evening concerts. The programmes include works by Couperin and some of his contemporaries.  Proud will be joined by musicians he has worked over the past 30 years and in each concert he will perform one of Couperin’s 27 Ordres for harpsichord, suites of dances and character pieces.

The concert on the 7th November, performed by Camerata Kilkenny, will include chamber music by Couperin, Telemann and Marais, integrating the French and Italian musical styles. On 14th November we will hear Couperin’s suites for bass viol performed by Nicholas Milne and Robert Smith, whilst in the third concert Couperin’s exquisite Leçons de ténèbres is coupled with Purcell’s beautiful elegy to Queen Mary.
