Irish National Opera presents: Bluebeard's Castle
Irish National Opera presents Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók.
Writer/director Enda Walsh and the award-winning team that brought you The Second Violinist in a new production of Béla Bartók’s searing, early 20th-century reimagining of the tale of Bluebeard.
“There are times when I suddenly become aware of the fact that I am absolutely alone! And I prophesy, I have a foreknowledge that this spiritual loneliness is to be my destiny”.
—Bartók, aged 24, to his mother.
Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s first stage work and only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, is a stark two hander based on a one-act mystery play by Béla Balázs. Presented as an allegorical fairytale, it quickly distorts into a compulsive pitch-dark morality story with increasing horror. A man and a woman are just married. They arrive at his home where even the walls weep. She wants to have no secrets in this house, to open door after door, no matter how terrifying, no matter how bloody. He is not so sure. She has her way.
Presented in association with the Dublin Theatre Festival in partnership with RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
