Linda Hill Junior Fellowship in Harpsichord/Continuo

The RCM is delighted to announce the new Linda Hill Junior Fellowship in Harpsichord/Continuo, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Linda Hill.

The Junior Fellow in Harpsichord/Continuo is required to accompany historical performance classes, examinations, chamber music rehearsals/sessions, baroque orchestral projects, masterclasses and one-to-one lessons as agreed with the Head of Historical Performance. 

Commitment to the RCM is likely to be in the region of 400 hours over the year, primarily during the RCM’s 30 teaching weeks. The Junior Fellow in Harpsichord/Continuo will report to the Head of Historical Performance and to the Projects Manager. The bursary for this Junior Fellowship is in the region of £9,000. This Junior Fellowship will be awarded for one year in the first instance, but may be available for a further year on application.

Requirements

Harpsichord/Continuo activities:

- To collaborate with the Historical Performance Department, accompanying historical performance classes, examinations, chamber music rehearsals/sessions, baroque orchestral projects, masterclasses and one-to-one lessons.

- To act as duo partner for students in concerts, prize competitions, faculty and guest masterclasses and examinations

- To lead historical performance faculty classes twice a term

- To lead, coach, direct, inform and work with RCM performers and composers

- To liaise with and give support to the Head of Historical Performance

RCM-based activities:

- To be a member of the team of Junior Fellows, giving support to other Junior Fellows, attending regular Junior Fellow meetings and contributing to wider Junior Fellow events

- To participate in the organisation of and attend the annual Junior Fellows’ evening

- To provide advice, contacts, and examples of career development to help current students

- To organise and/or become involved in projects and activities to work with current RCM students

- To take part in or attend, when invited, special RCM events within and outside the RCM (without further payment) and to represent the RCM on special occasions, as requested, and help to promote the RCM

Experience required:

- Educated to post-graduate level, specialising in harpsichord/continuo

- Proficiency in sight-reading

- Wide experience of harpsichord and continuo work

General:

- Junior Fellows are expected to live in London/Greater London and be based at the RCM and normally be in College at least three days a week in term time.

Applicants are required to submit a portfolio (please see How to apply for full details) and a covering letter detailing their experience in harpsichord/continuo.

Closing date for applications for 2015/16 is Friday 30 January 2015.
Auditions will be held on the morning of Wednesday 18 March 2015.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an audition and interview with the Director of the Royal College of Music and the Head of Historical Performance. For the audition, candidates will be asked to bring three contrasting pieces for solo harpsichord of their own choice (maximum 6 minutes each) and the panel will select one of these to hear. Candidates will also be given the continuo part from either a violin or recorder sonata from the eighteen century. They will be expected to perform at sight with a recorder player or baroque violinist who will be provided by the RCM.
