The Club Sessions

Friday, 18 January 2019, 8.00pm

Matt Molloy, John Carty, Arty Mc Glynn and Brian Mc Grath for Tullamore Club Sessions.

The Club Sessions, which holds intimate performances of traditional Irish and folk music at various points throughout the year in Tullamore, is set to commence its 2019 series in style this coming New Year. On 18th January the club will play host to giants of traditional Irish music Matt Molloy, John Carty, Arty McGlynn and Brian McGrath.
The Club has been privileged over the past number of years to present some of the biggest names in traditional music and also some of the most exciting up and coming young talent on the scene today. This next outing will be no exception when this near legendary line up takes to the stage.
Matt Molloy is without doubt one of the most influential musicians of his generation. He has brought traditional Irish music on the flute to places which couldn’t have been imagined were it not for his unique virtuoso skill, his pioneering vision and flair, and also his deep respect for the revered Roscommon/Sligo style of flute playing from which he has drawn inspiration since his youth. He has been a member of The Bothy Band, Planxty and of course The Chieftains, not to mention his illustrious career of solo, duet and trio playing. His albums and accolades are numerous, and it is truly a great pleasure to announce his coming to Tullamore.
Two of those many great albums that Matt has been involved over the course of his career have been with London born fiddle and banjo player John Carty. Carty's style is also very much based in the music of North Connaught. He has released numerous solo fiddle albums over the years and has been a member of At The Racket. In 2003 he received the highly prestigious TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year award. Fiddle and flute have long been regarded as one of the finest pairings of traditional instruments and one couldn't expect to find a more able and complimentary duo than Matt Molloy and John Carty.
The line-up does not end here however. Accompaniment will be provided by legendary guitarist Arty McGlynn and piano player Brian McGrath, both of whom have appeared on recordings with the former two musicians. These four unique musical voices will bring to the stage a wealth of experience and skill, their own personal musical flavours gelled by mutual respect, and an array of instruments and sounds. This promises to be a rich performance with both drive and nuance. Any fan of traditional music in the midlands should make sure to book well in advance as this concert is already proving to attract much attention and ticket sales have already begun.
The event takes place on the 18th of January at the Tullamore Rugby Club. Doors open at 19:30 and music begins at 20:00. For tickets and information contact 087 2661822. Supported by Offaly Arts.
