Reeds & Reels | Kaleidoscope Night

Wednesday, 5 June 2019, 8.30pm

It’s the final instalment of the Kaleidoscope 2018/2019 season, the 10th of the 10th season. For the series finale, curators Karen Dervan and Lioba Petrie present a return visit by the inimitable percussive dancer, the Michigan-born, Nic Gareiss. A truly unique and mesmerising performer, he has been suitably described as the "human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being". He is joined by traditional Irish fiddle player, Ultan O Brien, also making a return to the Kaleidoscope stage. Sharing the Bello Bar stage with this duo will be seven of Ireland's finest woodwind players, namely Cassiopeia Winds and a trio of Julie Maisel (flute), Paul Roe (clarinet) and John Hearne (bassoon). The programme is filled with rarely heard music by 20th century American composer, Luigi Zaninelli, wind quintets by Giuseppe Cambini and Darius Milhaud and a haunting work for bass clarinet and electronics by Irish composer, Ed Bennett. This promises to be one of the series most unusual programmes to date, and that is saying a lot about a series that is about as predictable as Irish spring weather.
