Waltons World Masters presents

HUGH MASEKELA

Hugh Masekela is universally acknowledged as the essence of South African music and one of the world’s all-time great horn players. His voice has long spoken out in his country’s struggle for civil rights, while his soaring, joyful trumpet brims with warmth and bristles with elements of township jazz, hip-hop and funk. A brief list of artists Masekela has worked with over the years – Miriam Makeba, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Belafonte, Herb Alpert and Fela Kuti – provides some sense of the sheer breadth of his music. This concert, part of his 75th Birthday Tour, is performed in honour of the late Nelson Mandela.

‘A musician of phenomenal grace and power…blessed with a voice that can strip the leaves from the trees.’
– The Independent

‘Hope, vitality, defiance, beauty and currency. What else could you ask from any artist?’
– Rolling Stone

‘Hugh Masekela creates an instant party, leading from vocals and flugelhorn like a South African Louis Armstrong.’
– The Guardian

‘An electrifying evening of Afrobeat, jazz fusion and poetic laments.’
– Plain Dealer

Hugh Masekela and his group will be supported by Tig Linn, a group of Irish and Nigerian musicians based in Dublin. The group grew out of a larger, looser collective of African and Irish musicians in 2011 and has used its music in support of many causes. It was partly this interest in social justice that prompted Mavis Staples to choose them as support act for her World Masters performance at the National Concert Hall in 2012, but that wasn’t the only reason. Tig Linn is simply a great live act!

Tickets €20 - €46 from nch.ie
