Saturday, 1 December 2018, 11.55pm

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music seeks to appoint an accomplished senior faculty at the full professor level to be the inaugural holder of the Kenny Burrell Chair in Jazz Studies and a key faculty in establishing the School’s new Global Jazz Studies major.

Global Jazz Studies, an interdepartmental Bachelor of Arts program, is an extension of the former jazz studies concentration established by Burrell in 1996. The new program focuses on the study of jazz from a world perspective, recognizing the importance of learning traditional, contemporary, and global approaches to performance, composition, and scholarship, as well as the African American musical heritage of jazz.

Responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate (and eventually graduate) students in one or more of the following areas: analyses of early and contemporary jazz styles; composition, arranging, and theory; and cross-cultural perspectives in jazz. Responsibilities may also include directing a student ensemble. Candidates are expected to have an exceptional background in scholarship, performance, composition, or other creative areas. Additionally, academic leadership and fundraising skills are essential for advancing the new program. Candidates must be eligible for a split appointment in one of the School’s three cognate departments: Ethnomusicology, Music, or Musicology.

The successful candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to furthering the values of diversity in our university community through exemplary teaching, research and service. Candidates with a doctorate or its professional equivalent in academic and creative experience are preferred. A bachelor’s degree is required.
