From Viljandi to Kinvara - Mick O'Brien, Dave Flynn, Juhan Suits & Janne Suits

Saturday, 30 March 2013, 8.00pm

From Viljandi to Kinvara is a project which brings together Irish musicians Mick O’Brien (uilleann pipes, flute, whistles) and Dave Flynn (guitar, vocals, mandolin) with Estonian musicians Juhan Suits (Estonian bagpipes, wooden horn, whistle, Jews Harp) and Janne Suits (Estonian Bowed Lyre, Estonian Fiddle, Vocals) for a series of events in Ireland in March 2013. They will present concerts and workshops exploring the musical links between Irish and Estonian traditional music.

To facilitate close collaboration, O’Brien and Flynn will travel to Estonia in February to explore the intricacies of Estonian folk music, develop a shared repertoire with their Estonian colleagues, and find inspiration for a new collaborative composition of 10-minutes duration which will form the centrepiece of the events in March. The instrumentation for the work will include Estonian bagpipes, Estonian bowed lyre, uilleann pipes and guitar.

The work will be premiered at this event alongside new arrangements created by all the musicians.

From Viljandi to Kinvara is presented in association with the National Concert Hall, the Estonian Traditional Music Center and the Arts Council of Ireland's Culture Connects Programme to Mark Ireland's EU Presidency.
