Chair of Jazz Composition
Berklee College of Music invites nominations and applications for the position of Jazz Composition Department Chair. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Berklee is the world’s largest independent music college and the premier institution for the study of contemporary music.
The Jazz Composition Department includes 9 faculty members teaching classes and providing directed study to 125 Jazz Composition majors and other interested Berklee students.
The student majoring in Jazz Composition studies historic and contemporary jazz writing for small ensembles and big band, jazz arranging, jazz counterpoint, jazz history, keyboard, and music technology as it relates to the jazz composer. The student also learns about the role of the professional composer in today’s music industry, developing the skills and knowledge to function effectively as a jazz composer under a wide variety of conditions and music industry environments.
The candidate should be an excellent jazz composer, experienced educator and effective administrator with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting. A thorough understanding of jazz composition and history, as well as current trends in jazz composition and jazz arranging, are essential. A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required. This is a twelve-month position with a renewable contract. The start date for the position is September 1, 2018, or earlier depending on availability.
