Wexford Festival Singers’ choral concert to feature Pergolesi's masterpiece, Stabat Mater, as well as Agnus Dei by local composer Liam Bates
On Palm Sunday 2019, Wexford Festival Singers, together with Enniscorthy Choral Society, will perform the world renowned oratorio Stabat Mater by Italian composer Pergolesi. The programme will also include Agnus Dei by local composer Liam Bates. This is one movement from an oratorio, Victus, which the Wexford Festival Singers plan to commission from Liam. They will launch a fund-raising campaign for this commission at the concert.
The text of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater expresses compassion for Mary, mother of Christ as, as she watches her son suffering on the cross. This sensitive piece has been described as a transcendently beautiful and deeply personal musical meditation of suffering and redemption. The concert will take place in Rowe Street Church, Wexford on Sunday 14April at 3.30 pm. Conducted by Dr Kevin O'Carroll, the concert will feature soloists Roisin O'Grady, soprano, and Sandra Wickham, contralto, with Musici Ireland string quartet.
