The Glyndebourne is looking for someone with experience of managing the day to day running of a large scale repertory stage department to support our objective of creating world-class transformative opera.

As Head of Stage you will be responsible for the overall short and long term-planning of the Stage Department, for the Glyndebourne Festival, Tour and other projects. With the support of 4 Stage Supervisors and 2 Head Fly Technicians, you will manage the technical stage staff to deliver the highest standards in all scenic and flown aspects of our productions.

With a background in technical theatre including scenic production, you will have strong management and organisational skills to manage a complex stage schedule with a large team of permanent and seasonal staff

Key Tasks & Responsibilities
General
– To manage the effective day to day running of the Stage Department, resources and staff, ensuring high production standards to realise the creative vision, within the budget, practical and time constraints of repertory opera
– To schedule the department’s Day and Night Crews
– To delegate shows, tasks and projects to the Stage Supervisors and Senior Technicians ensuring clear communication between Production Managers and Show Supervisors
– To develop a working knowledge of Glyndebourne productions in the repertory, understanding the technical and staffing implications of running these productions within the schedule
– To plan, organise and be responsible for the Glyndebourne stores, (Ripe), to ensure the most productive use of storage space, keeping accurate records of show whereabouts
– To liaise with the Production Manager, in conjunction with the Show Supervisors, on the construction of scenery and props to ensure that the productions can be run and stored within the confines of Glyndebourne and touring venues
– To organise and participate, as necessary, in planning, schedule, production, model and other department meetings ensuring that all the relevant information is communicated effectively within the Stage Department
– To support the production department with revivals and other Glyndebourne projects
– To monitor all productions to ensure they are set and maintained properly, and reproduced accurately and consistently
– To liaise with the Technical Co-ordinator in relation to Glyndebourne productions on hire and organise the logistics

Planning
– To plan the most effective and efficient way of realising the schedule
– To assist and advise the Technical and Planning departments on the overall planning of the Tour. This includes: organising the transport of all technical and production materials to and from each theatre
– To assess, develop and implement, in conjunction with the Technical Director, a long term development plan for the Stage Department.

Staff Management
– To develop a good working relationship with technical staff by being a presence on stage, supporting and advising as and when necessary, to ensure the smooth running of the stage area at all times
– To recruit full time and/or casual staff in line with the requirements of productions
– With the support of a seasonal administration assistant, to ensure that all timesheets, holiday forms, fit notes are submitted to payroll, and that departmental records are stored and up-to-date
– To set standards of professional craft skills and competence ensuring they are maintained and enhanced and, where necessary
– To appraise all direct reports and ensure staff working in the department have an annual appraisal to manage performance, identify training needs and opportunities for staff development
– To ensure that all the Stage Supervisors and Senior Technicians operate within the terms of the BECTUcollective agreement, and have a consistent approach
– To participate, as required by the Technical Director, in the negotiations with BECTU 

Financial
– To assess and report on the staging of Glyndebourne’s future artistic plans (18 months to 4 years ahead), providing costs and technical recommendations or modifications as necessary
– To set, manage and be accountable for the Stage Department budgets (salaries, logistic costs, materials) giving updates and forecasts as necessary to ensure that budgets are managed or that any potential deviation is promptly notified and agreed
– To advise the Technical Director, and others, of any financial implications for the Technical Department because of artistic, production or legal decisions made
Health & Safety
– To ensure the provision of a safe working environment, adhering to the Company’s Health & Safety policy at all times, including overseeing of production risk assessments
– To ensure that the Stage Supervisors, Senior Technicians and staff fully understand their Health & Safety responsibilities and are adequately trained and fully competent to put them into practice
– Other
– To carry out any other duties related to the post as required. 

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience
– Educated to degree level or equivalent, with an extensive knowledge of stagecraft
– Significant management experience in a large scale repertory theatre or opera house
– Proven leadership skills
– Proven experience of planning and scheduling staff and resources preferably within a unionised environment
– Good organisational and project management skills, and the ability to balance competing pressures, deadlines and demands
– Budget management experience and numerate
– Good IT skills
– Good communicator, able to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and effectively
– A working knowledge of CAD together with a health and safety qualification and driving licence would be an advantage. 

Hours, Salary & Benefits
– The contractual hours of work are 39 per week. However, you would be expected to work additional hours including some evenings and weekends during the rehearsal and performance periods.
– We can offer a salary of circa £45,000 per annum dependant on experience.
– We offer 33 days / 6.6 weeks holiday per year including public holidays.
