Case Scaglione, associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic, leads two richly evocative works, Stanford’s vigorous First Irish Rhapsody, with its lyrical use of the Londonderry Air, and Josef Suk’s mournful and intensely moving Second Symphony, named after the carrier of souls after death, Asrael. The ‘awesome talent’ (The Independent) of young English cellist Richard Harwood takes centre stage for one of the masterpieces of the Romantic era, Saint-Saëns’ intense and richly lyrical First Cello Concerto.
