Now in its 5th year, Dublin International Piano Festival is making a welcome return this July with a stellar programme sure to delight music lovers. To mark the beginning of a wonderful and diverse lineup of performances, workshops, and events, The Hugh Lane will host a Schubertiade on July 22nd - celebrating the pivotal works of Franz Schubert.

The festival’s Artistic Director and founder Dr Archie Chen will be joined by Evelyne Brancart Professor of Music (Piano) at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington for a special recital. Together, they will bring some of Schubert’s most exhilarating work to life, setting the tone for 2017’s festival.

Described by the Irish Times as a pianist who performs with “… gorgeously full tone and daring velocity… ” Chen has gained international recognition for his poetic imagination, drama and virtuosic technical prowess. Co-founder and Director of Development at the Piano Academy of Ireland, Dr. Chen has performed in esteemed venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, Vatican Auditorium and concert halls throughout China. Among other prizes during his eclectic career, he was awarded Artist of the Year by the New York Classical Music Society in 2013. As well as his solo and chamber work, Chen has performed with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Washington Symphony and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra among many others. A new disc of Liszt & Chopin is forthcoming from Chen on Carnegie Artists.

Belgium-born Brancart made her debut in Alice Tully Hall in 1982, with a memorable performance of Chopin 24 etudes and Brahms Paganini Variations. A respected musician and academic, she has performed with high-calibre artists like Joshua Bell and Miriam Fried, and is renowned for her masterclasses which she has held around the globe, from Los Angeles and Chile to right here in Ireland. Brancart has taught previously at The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Rice University in Houston and San Francisco Conservatory of Music among others. Her extensive discography is available from Deutsche Gramophon, Boston Records and Decca to name but a few.

Join Brancart and Chen as they perform Fantasie in F minor and Sonata for Piano Duet in C major, ‘Grand Duo’, D. 812. Regarded as one of the most prolific and innovative composers of the early 19th century, the music of Schubert performed live will be a delight for musicians and fans alike.
