ConTempo at Traidphicnic

ConTempo at Traidphicnic

Sunday, 7 July 2019, 2.00pm

The Galway Music Residency has long had a love affair with traditional Irish music. Since its earliest beginnings, it has explored the links between classical music, traditional Irish music and through its ensemble in residence, ConTempo Quartet, Romanian folk. This marriage of music has been most evident through the ongoing relationship between ConTempo Quartet, Máirtín O’Connor, Garry Ó Briain and Cathal Hayden, who together developed the Spiccato Junction project, a true fusion of traditions. In more recent times, the Galway Music Residency and ConTempo have begun to explore the possible interactions between string quartet and uilleann pipes, the result of which they are delighted to present at the 2019 Traidphicnic Festival on Sunday 7th July at 2pm.

ConTempo Quartet will perform a varied programme of Irish music written for string quartet or music inspired by Irish themes and the uilleann pipes. They will also be joined by talented young Galway piper Pádraic Keane, a musician who has played a key role in ConTempo’s collaboration with the pipes thus far. Together, they will perform works by Amanda Feery and the late Mícheál Ó Suilleabháin written for string quartet and uilleann pipes, as well as arrangements of traditional tunes for this unique instrumental combination.

This project marks the first ever collaboration between the Galway Music Residency and Traidphicnic. Speaking of the new relationship, General Manager of the Galway Music Residency, Maeve Bryan, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Traidphicnic for the first time. This festival truly serves the local community, providing an artfully curated programme of music, art and culture. Community is at the heart of the Galway Music Residency’s mission as well, so this partnership is a very natural one and we’re excited to share the results with the people of Galway.”

This is a family-friendly event. Entry to the festival is on a ‘donate what you can’ basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable cups. Vendors will offer a small discount to patrons using these.

The Galway Music Residency is kindly supported by NUI Galway (Education Partner), Arts Council Ireland, and Galway City and County Councils. For further information, visit www.thegalwaymusicresidency.ie.

Thaitin an ceol traidisiúnta riamh linn sa Galway Music Residency. Ó bhunú na cónaitheachta ar aghaidh, táimid tar éis iarracht a dhéanamh nasc a chruthú idir an ceol clasaiceach, ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann agus ceol traidisiúnta na Rómáine, tríd an ngrúpa cónaitheach, ConTempo Quartet. Is é an sampla is fearr den nasc sin an pháirtnéireacht idir ConTempo Quartet, Máirtín O’Connor, Garry Ó Briain agus Cathal Hayden, a tháinig le chéile tríd an togra Spiccato Junction chun na traidisiúin éagsúla ceoil a shnoí le chéile go spreagúil spraíúil. Le blianta beaga anuas, tá an Galway Music Residency agus ConTempo ag breathnú ar na bealaí inar féidir le ceathairáid téadach agus píobairí uillinn seinnt le chéile, agus beidh torthaí na hoibre sin le cloisteáil ag Traidphicnic 2019, Dé Domhnaigh an 7 Iúil ag a 2pm.

Seinnfidh ConTempo Quartet réimse leathan de cheol do cheathairáid téadach, lena n-áirítear ceol Éireannach, ceol atá spreagtha ag an tír seo agus ceol atá spreagtha ag na píoba uillinn. Ar an stáitse le ConTempo, beidh an píobaire óg cumasach ó Ghaillimh, Pádraic Keane – ceoltóir atá tar éis comhoibriú le ConTempo roimhe seo. Seinnfidh siad píosaí ceoil le Amanda Feery agus le Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin a cumadh le haghaidh ceatharáid téadach agus na píoba uillinn, chomh maith le roinnt port traidisiúnta atá cóirithe don mheascán speisialta uirlisí seo.

Is é seo an chéad chomhoibriú idir an Galway Music Residency agus Traidphicnic. Dar le Bainisteoir Ginearálta an Galway Music Residency, Maeve Bryan: “Táimid fíorshásta go bhfuil deis againn obair i gcomhpháirt le Traidphicnic den chéad uair. Tá an fhéile seo ag freastal go díreach ar an bpobal, agus tá clár speisialta ceoil, ealaíne agus cultúir curtha le chéile acu. Tá an pobal i gcroílár mhisean an Galway Music Residency freisin, agus is páirtnéireacht nádúrtha é seo mar gheall air sin. Táimid ag tnúth go mór le torthaí na páirtnéireachta a roinnt le muintir na Gaillimhe.”

Tá an ócáid seo oiriúnach do theaghlaigh. Níl costas faoi leith ag baint leis an bhféile ach iarrfar ar dhaoine an méad is féidir leo a íoc. Moltar do dhaoine cupáin in-athúsáidte a thabhairt leo mar beidh lascaine speisialta ar fáil ar dheochanna.

Tá an Galway Music Residency urraithe ag OÉ Gaillimh (Páirtnéir Oideachais), Comhairle Ealaíon na hÉireann, Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe. Ta tuilleadh eolais ag: www.thegalwaymusicresidency.ie.
