Southern Tenant Folk Union

Saturday, 7 March 2015, 8.00pm

One of the most highly acclaimed folk/bluegrass bands in the UK they’ve just released their sixth album ‘The Chuck Norris Project’. Playing an eclectic mix of high energy atmospheric folk they have had airplay from Bob Harris & Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 2, appeared live on RTE TV’s ‘The Late Late Show & BBC TV’s ‘Andrew Marr Show’ plus high praise in The Irish Times, The Independent & The Guardian has seen them light up the folk scene. Inventive, artistically successful and with an exciting live act worked around a single microphone they sell out arts centres across Europe.

Started in 2006 by Belfast born and Liverpool/London raised musician Pat McGarvey, he has, through various different line-ups of the collective, driven ever increasingly forward in taking genre clichés and subverting them into more interesting shapes and patterns, attempting to create roots music that has depth both lyrically and musically. The name itself comes from a desire to find a union based name for the group and one that also suited the style of music.

Their 6th album, ‘The Chuck Norris Project’, was released in January 2015 launching at Celtic Connections and takes the disparate influences the band has, expands upon them, and progresses the experiment ever further whilst always posing the question “what can we do with these acoustic instruments?”. The band continue to tour in the manner of Willie Nelson, that is with an exciting live show that engages the audience, talks & tells stories, discusses issues, is informal and also one that displays the fully eclectic and interesting music from across the band’s career to date. And like Willie they play the hits.

‘Offering an alluring Scottish folk/old-time string band mix, it’s still stamped with a provocative charm that makes it an effective slow burn…beautiful recording quality, subtle arrangements and involving, melancholic songs are powerfully persuasive’ COLIN IRWIN, MOJO

‘There’s clearly a lot more to come from this act, given their desire to push the boundaries of folk music rather than stubbornly stick to its traditional basics.’JOE LEPPER, 8/10, NEON FILLER
