Maynooth University’s MA Masters programmes (MA in Composition, MA in Performance and Technology, MA in Musicology, and MA in Creative Music Technologies) are now open for applications. Apply online at: www.pac.ie/maynoothuniversity

The Music Department at Maynooth University is renowned for its long and proud tradition of musicology, performance and music technology, immersing students in a vibrant, challenging and creative educational environment.

Students are engaged in rehearsals, concerts and the music studios. Experience is offered within six music ensembles, all professionally directed by the Department, including the chamber orchestra, the guitar ensemble, the traditional group, the choral society and chamber choir. Students with a passion for the creation and performance of a whole range of music styles will find the space and the academic support to build their professional skills as musicians and music creators. They also build the confidence and techniques needed for live performance or to further their career in the arts and culture sector, in the music industry or in other fields.

Why are people so passionate about music? How can it influence individual identities and shape societies? How do we explain and interpret what we hear and perform?

These questions are at the heart of the MA in Musicology at Maynooth. The programme is open to graduates driven by a desire to develop a deep understanding of music history, analysis, and musical cultures. Exposed to current musicological thought and traditional methodologies, students are encouraged to grow as independent, open-minded scholars. You will explore a range of styles—from historical and contemporary art music, to Irish traditional music, to popular music of the last century—and encounter multiple intellectual approaches to this material. Taught by staff whose research often ventures into interdisciplinary terrain, you will also consider how theoretical perspectives on gender, sexuality, race, literature, theatre, and film can shed new light on how we understand music.
