20 Musical Highlights at the 2015 Dublin Fringe

Monday, 7 September 2015, 8.00pm

The 2015 Tiger Dublin Fringe festival takes place over 14 days on 7–20 September. Among a wider programme of theatre, dance, circus, comedy and live art, there is 20 diverse music and sound events taking place, at venues such as the the Spiegeltent, Abbey Theatre, Smock Alley Theate, O’Reilly Theatre, The Chocolate Factory and Project Arts Centre.

Crash Ensemble collaborating with composer and sound designer Nina Perry and Adrian Crowley, avant-garde cellist Ernst Reijseger with Bottlenote Ensemble, sound artist Holly Herndon (pictured above), Irish Youth Opera, jazz and cabaret singer Susannah De Wrixon, creative community Young Hearts Run Free, Booka Brass Band, a new work by Ailís Ní Ríain, Wallis Bird, Niamh Farrell from HamsandwicH, Thomas Bartlett and Gavin Glass – for details on all 20 shows, see below.

Stories Through Sound featuring Nina Perry, Crash Ensemble and Adrian Crowley
Members of Crash Ensemble create soundtracks for documentaries by multi-award winning radio producer and composer Nina Perry.
 Plus Adrian Crowley’s debut collection of spoken word stories, with soundscape. Spiegeltent, 9 September.

Susannah with Strings Attached
Susannah De Wrixon connects two musical worlds as she presents new arrangements of forgotten songs. With the Delmaine String quartet and Jim Doherty (piano).

The Walls Have Ears
Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger is joined by Irish musicians Seán Carpio (guitar, electronics), Shane Latimer (guitars, electronics), Seán Mac Erlaine (clarinets, processing), and Justin Carroll (keyboards) as they lead the audience from room to room with site-specific improvised music.

Booka Brass Band

Sklonište
Sklonište (meaning ‘shelter’) offers us an insight into the tragedy and the humour of a people determined to survive in a Sarajevo under seige in 1994 – a combination of contemporary music for solo accordion, video, photography, documentary and storytelling. Ailís Ní Ríain (music), Dermot Dunne (accordion), Sarajevo-based Jim Marshall (images).

Turning Pirate Mix Tape
This Fringe-special line up includes Wallis Bird, Niamh Farrell (HamsandwicH), Mama Kin, Pete Pamf, Adam Matthews, The Young Folk, Gavin Glass and Anderson. Some of Ireland’s best known musicians sing each others’ songs and their own.

Irish Youth Opera presents Agrippina by Handel
Irish Youth Opera presents Handel’s Agrippina (considered Handel’s first masterpiece) with conductor Jonathan Cohen and director Oliver Mears.

Middle of the Road
Hoyle and Bourgeois & Maurice collaborate for the first time and intentionally mix dull, ‘normal’ pop music with original songs, panel discussions and powerpoint presentations in their celebration of everything ‘boring’ in life. Spiegeltent, 13 September.

Life Has Surface Noise #3
Psychogeographer and writer Karl Whitney; broadcasters, DJs and record collectors Stevie Grainger, Niall Byrne and Peter Toomey; designer Annie Atkins and surprise guests join academic and arts journalist Siobhán Kane as they explore the theme of space and how our lives in a certain city can be represented by a particular soundtrack. Presented by Young Hearts Run Free.

Mx Justin Vivian Bond …And Things of THAT Nature
Under the musical direction of Thomas Bartlett with special guests, Mx Bond brings an evening of original songs from V’s albums Dendrophile and Silver Wells along with comic anecdotes about their childhood memoir Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels.

No Encore
Indie band No Encore  play their final gig covering the likes of Morrissey, Stipe, Albarn and Cocker. Written and performed by Kiara Gannon and Ciarán O’Keeffe (Best Performer nomination for An Insignificant Man at Tiger Dublin Fringe 2014).

The Nineteenth Autumn
