Come West along the Road / Siar an Bóthar: A Retrospective – Nicholas Carolan
The lecture comprises a brief look back at the 20 years (to the month) of the two archival television series of Irish traditional music Come West along the Road on RTÉ and Siar an Bóthar on TG4, series which Nicholas Carolan compiled, scripted, presented, edited etc throughout their 1994 to 2014 run. They are the longest running tv series on Irish music of any kind, and they had a live audience of 250,000 and also a world-wide viewership on the station online players. The film clips will concentrate on traditional music of the east coast and will include material of Drogheda connection.
Nicholas Carolan, from Drogheda, Co Louth, is Director Emeritus of the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin, of which he was the founder-director from 1987 to 2015. A former Hon. Secretary of the Folk Music Society of Ireland and lecturer on Irish traditional music in the School of Music, Trinity College Dublin, he is a researcher and writer and frequent lecturer on traditional music, but is best known as the presenter of the long-running archival television series Come West along the Road on RTÉ and Siar an Bóthar on TG4. His publications include an edition of A Collection of the Most Celebrated Irish Tunes of 1724, A Short Discography of Irish Folk Music, A Harvest Saved: Francis O'Neill and Irish Music in Chicago, the CDs Seoltaí Séidte 1–2, and the DVDs Come West along the Road 1–4.
