Music Technician

Dollar Academy is one of Scotland’s top day and boarding schools, situated in a beautiful rural location, with excellent facilities open to pupils and staff alike. The successful candidate will be joining an extremely busy and vibrant Music Department which hosts a purpose-built recording facility. 

The Music Technician will be required to assemble, operate and maintain the equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound in the Music Department, the Auditorium and campus-wide.

You must be highly skilled in troubleshooting general computer errors in a Windows environment, especially within Pro Tools and Sibelius software, and when operating Focusrite 2i4 Audio Interfaces.  In addition, you will be expected to guide pupils through recording and mixing in class and in the studio, which will require experience of operating a Pro Tools HD Mac set-up using a digital C24 mixing console and Digidesign 192 interfaces. Knowledge of good microphone technique across a wide range of instruments is also required.

The position will be full-time/term-time only, and will require a high degree of flexibility.

Specific duties

•Tutoring SQA candidates in Sound Engineering and Production to Advanced Higher level

•Management of media; installation of software on PC and Mac computer systems

•Troubleshooting in Windows, Pro Tools and Sibelius, and when operating Focusrite 2i4 Audio Interfaces

•Maintaining equipment inventory and sourcing new equipment/stock; liaison with suppliers

•Assisting in the creation of exam papers, study materials and classroom resources

•Delivering training to staff and students in use of technical and audio equipment

•Engineering recording sessions and live performances of orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs and big bands

•Providing live sound for events and liaison with clients

•Operating mixing desk during recording/performances

•Supporting teaching staff, preparing equipment/resources for classes, studio sessions and performances

•Anticipating and correcting problems

•Maintaining and carrying out repairs to equipment within the Music Department (PCs, headphones, microphones, leads etc)

•Liaison with teaching staff to determine requirements for class teaching sessions

•Making recommendations for the requisition and purchase of audio equipment and spare parts

Salary

Salary will be in the region of £19,000 pro rata, dependent on experience and skills.

Hours

Normal working hours shall be based on a 35 hour week with precise working patterns to be agreed with the Director of Music.

Pension

Our support staff are automatically enrolled in the Local Government Superannuation Scheme, to which the Governors contribute the statutory level of Employer’s Contributions.

Holidays 

This is a term-time only position and school holidays apply.

Sick Pay/Contractual Matters

A generous sick pay scale is available, and linked to length of service. Details of this, and all other contractual matters, are set out in the Contract of Employment for Support Staff, which will be issued to the successful candidate on appointment.

School Fees

Employees whose children attend the Academy are entitled to fee remission, and details will be made available to the successful candidate.

Disclosure Scotland

All appointments at Dollar Academy are subject to satisfactory clearance through the Disclosure Scotland Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme. The successful candidate will be asked to make a formal application, the cost of which will be borne by the Academy.
