A programme of music by composers Telemann, Purcell, Marini, Biber, Handel and Leclair inspired by fantastical literary works from the 17th and 18th centuries alongside traditional Irish music with associated themes performed by the great Irish uilleann piper David Power.

Camerata Kilkenny, the early music ensemble founded by Swiss violinist Maya Homburger and Irish harpsichordist and organist Malcolm Proud, has devised, with uilleann piper David Power,  this programme, which combines music by 17th and 18th century composers who were inspired by fantastical literary works with traditional Irish music with associated themes.

Telemann’s ‘La Musette’, uses folk themes from Eastern Music while his charming ‘Gulliver Suite’ written in 1728, just two years after the publication of Swift’s great satire ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ depicts Swift’s characters in terms of musical gestures. Even Telemann’s score visually depicts the characters and scenes from the novel.

Also in the programme is the incidental music from Henry Purcell’s opera ‘The Faerie Queen’ based on Shakespeare’s play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Also featuring are a sonata for violin and continuo by the Bohemian composer H.I.F. Biber, and a Passacalia by the Italian 17th century composer Marini.

Uilleann piper David Power has compiled a programme of Irish traditional music representing fairy stories (An Leanbh Sídhe and The Pinch of Snuff) and descriptive pieces (The Fox Chase) while together David Power and Camerata Kilkenny will play the Pifa from Handel’s Messiah and a Musette and Menuet from composer Jean-Marie Leclair’s opera ‘Scylla et Glaucus’ in which French bagpipes (musettes) were used to represent pastoral scenes in the opera.

Tickets: €20 / €18 concessons / €6 with student card
