Guitarist Mike Nielsen has performed with many international musicians including Dave Liebman, Pat LaBarbera and Kenny Werner. He been researching microtonality since 1999 and holds an MPhil in Physics and Music from DIT (First Award), and a PhD in Microtonal Improvisation from Ulster University (Vice-Chancellor Scholarship), in addition to an LTCL in classical performance and a two-year stint at Berklee College of Music, Boston (Jim Hall Incentive award, ‘83-‘85).

His work includes the development of novel microtonal systems based on the original structure of the guitar, guitar design and composition. In 2016 an excerpt from an MPhil composition was featured in The Contemporary Guitar by Emmy Award winning guitarist, John Schneider. During his performance-led PhD research a fruitful collaboration with vocalist Ellen Demos resulted in significant microtonal voice development which culminated in a duo CD recording and video <https://youtu.be/dpUq2eMjVuY>.

Mike received an Arts Council Project Award in 2018 to further develop his microtonal guitar performance in quartet format (Crimo Quartet) augmenting the duo with the exceptional talents of musicians Shane O’ Donovan, percussion, electronics and Matt Halpin, saxes. The primary focus of the quartet is to introduce electronics: Mike, Shane and Ellen, percussion, and a microtonal sax improvisatory paradigm based on the novel microtonal structures.

“It is fantastic to perform for a leading promotion company like Note which has provided an important platform for our new music.” Mike Nielsen

“Mike is fearless, endlessly innovative, and gifted with a boundless musical curiosity.“ Galwayjazz.ie
