Experimental pianist German composer Volker Bertelmann, or Hauschka as he is widely known, is one of the most recognisable 21st century proponents of what is known as prepared piano – one whose sound is altered by the placing of objects between or upon its strings, hammers and dampers.

Noted for his compelling live shows that reimagine the expressive possibilities of the piano through an array of imaginative ‘preparations’- where sounds from the instrument can resemble anything from exotic drums to electronic devices – and regularly compared to the likes of John Cage and Steve Reich, his compositions are characterized by a blend of beauty, melancholy and surprise.
A multidimensional musician who is also known for his compositions in the field of cinema, theatre and art, his music for the film Lion, created in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran, was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe in 2016.
This performance will be a chance to experience the imaginary landscapes of a unique composer and share in his ongoing romance with the piano.

“The sounds that Volker Bertelmann creates with(in) a piano are nothing short of astonishing… a triumph’ – Mojo

“The missing link between classical instrumentation and contemporary electronica” – The Guardian
