Dublin’s most happening regular Jazz session continues this Wednesday featuring three of Ireland’s most internationally recognised musicians plus an ever-changing selection of guests from Dublin and abroad. The band plays up on a mezzanine stage, making this not only a night of exciting Jazz music, but also quite a spectacle! It is a fun and informal session and a great hang on a Wednesday night.
The Dwarf Jar session is led by Irish-Australian saxophonist Daniel Rorke who has lived and worked in Ireland, Iceland, Australia, Norway, New York, and toured throughout the world. His performance career has included work with many well-known Nordic musicians such as Hilmar Jensson, Per Oddvar Johansen, Rune Nergaard, Veli Kujala, Australian piano giant Alister Spence, and many others. He has been called “a heavyweight” by the Jazz magazine Jazznytt and his latest recording “The Dark” is now available through the Norwegian Jazz label “Just for the Records”.
On double bass the indefatigable Cormac O’Brien is the axel around which the whole wheel turns. He is likely Ireland’s most accomplished Jazz bassist and has been sought after by many within and beyond Ireland’s shores for his impeccable time, precise intonation and imaginative musical ear. His recent work with British musicians pianist Kit Downes and saxophonist Stan Sulzmann was a magical moment in Irish Jazz. His CD “The Rhythm Method: By the Bye” was released in 2015 to much critical acclaim.
Matthew Jacobson is a name known to anyone interested in creative Jazz music in Ireland. With numerous projects under his belt, such as his own Redivider and the group Roamer, featuring Simon Jermyn, Matthew Halpin and Laura Kinsella, Jacobson is fast becoming a juggernaut of European creative Jazz music. His drumming is always interesting, always playing into the music. The Fullbright scholar has played a slew of important festivals and Jazz clubs and his album “ReDiviDeR meets I Dig Monk: Tuned” is out now on Diatribe Records.
The three of these musicians have been performing as a trio sporadically since 2011. Their record “The Brave Ones Have All Left Us” on SATU Records, featuring the trio plus Norwegian bassist Aksel Jensen and guitarist Shane Latimer, is a veritable journey through the looking glass of improvised music.
The Dwarf Jar is a unique opportunity to hear three of Ireland’s most creative musicians in an informal conference with their peers. Wednesday is a session, at the same time a workshop, and at the same time a hang. Come and hear new music being made, and some simple clean fun being had by musicians who love to play.
