Orchestras for All's Modulo Programme comes to Z-arts

Monday, 20 March 2017, 3.00pm

Young musicians from secondary schools across the North West will come together for a day of ensemble music-making at Z-arts. Following a day of exciting rehearsals alongside a team of professional orchestral tutors, the young musicians will perform selections from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition along with their own creative responses.

Orchestras for All use music as a social tool for change. We create an inclusive opportunity for young people facing challenging circumstances to flourish and achieve through music and are supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and Teach First.

The Modulo Programme, now in its fourth year, is an innovative programme designed to kick-start music-making in under-resourced secondary schools and community groups. The programme, shortlisted for Best Musical Initiative at the 2017 Music Teacher Awards, supports music teachers and community music leaders from around the UK to establish small instrumental ensembles in their school or community for students aged 11-18. The programme aims to help music teachers lead a rewarding instrument ensemble for students of any instrument or skill level who are keen in take part in music.

We provide teachers with bespoke arrangements of music that flexibly cater to all ability levels and instruments, rehearsal plans and resources and two opportunities per year to come together with other schools involved in the programme to perform as a large-scale orchestra, once regionally and once nationally.

The performance on 20 March will be the first time many of these young players have performed as part of an orchestra.

Performing, learning and playing music together has been proven by leading academics to have a huge impact on young people – developing numeracy, language skills, social skills, team work, discipline and confidence. The Modulo Programme aims to ensure all children can access these life-transforming opportunities, as well as inspiring teachers to continue the school’s ensemble group long after they leave the programme.
