The New Irish Jazz Orchestra returns to CIT Cork School of Music on April 22nd featuring guest Soloist - Michael Buckley (Tenor Sax.)

THE NEW IRISH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
The New Irish Jazz Orchestra is a professional large jazz ensemble that provides a platform for Ireland’s finest jazz improvising talent, big band virtuosi and - most importantly - new composers and arrangers. The ensemble has evolved from a three - year series of highly successful collaborative projects conceived and directed by Paul Dunlea. The band has performed sell out shows across the country in venues including The Opera House, Cork, The Grand Opera House, Belfast & The Everyman Theatre - Cork along with headlining the 2015 Cork & Limerick Jazz Festivals. Entire concerts have also been broadcast nationally on both RTE and BBC radio.
The band will perform works by leading composers from home and abroad as well as classic big band repertoire.

MICHAEL BUCKLEY
Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist / flautist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has beendeveloped by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his ownunique voice playing both on saxophone and flute.
The last two years alone 2012 Buckley has been collaborating with the world jazz Orchestra where michael was representing Ireland, also the Edinburgh jazz festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans) also small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman , John Abercrombie, Joey Baron , Jason Rebello,Nils Wolgram , Tom Rainey , Chander Sardjoe , to name but a few.
Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation, with countless albums from jazz to traditional to hip hop Michael is making a name for him self internationally as a producer and engineer.
Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberrys, The Coors,Jerry Lee Louis, Johnny Mattis ,also This year michael has been playing and touring with Glen Hansard as Michael is also renowned as the top session player and arranger in his field.
This year michael is about to release his new project on CD, a studio album he wrote produced and recorded in his private studio ,this will be a compilation of on going recording and writing over the last 5 years,
Michael recorded with out doubt his best work to date. Released on the Spanish label (Urban Beauty) The long awaited release of this latest CD “the tourist” featuring an impressive line up including Edward Simon (piano) Stephen Keogh (drums) and Jeremy Brown (bass)is also a working band throughout England and Europe .A rich and diverse collection of original music is what makes this recording most impressive.

PAUL DUNLEA

Although at home in a variety of musical styles, Cork trombonist/composer/arranger Paul Dunlea concentrates primarily on Jazz and Improvisation. This has furthered his reputation as one of Irelands most in demand trombonists.
Dunlea has performed/toured/recorded with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Frankie Valli, Liam O'Maonlaoi, Mick Flannery, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Bryce Dressner (The National), Lewis Nash, Peter Washington,Billy Drummond, Greg Gisbert,Tim Ries, David O' Rourke's O' Rourkestra, Marshall Gilkes, Ryan Keberle,Taylor Eigsti, Bob Millikan, The Crash Ensemble, The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Hot House Big Band,Cormac McCarthy’s Cottage Evolution, Brian Deady, Niall McCabe Band & The Hard Ground.
Dunlea is a graduate of the CIT Cork School of music holding both a bathelors degree in trombone performance and a masters degree in composition. He has held the chair of principle trombone with the Band 1 Brigade - Irish Defence Forces since 2001.
In 2011, Dunlea released his debut album ‘Bi-polAr’ to critical acclaim - reaching #1 in the iTunes chart. 2016 saw the release of his second album 'Fraternal' recorded at the renowned Bunker Studios, Brooklyn, NY featuring bassist Peter Washington, drummer Billy Drummond, guitarist David O’ Rourke (co-leader) & Cork’s Cormac McCarthy.
In 2013 Dunlea established his own big band as a creative outlet for his own compositions. To date, the band has performed sell out shows across the country in venues such as The Opera House, Cork, The Grand Opera House, Belfast & The Everyman Theatre - Cork along with headlining the 2015 Cork & Limerick Jazz Festivals. Entire concerts have also been broadcast nationally on both RTE and BBC radio
As well as writing for his own various groups and ensembles, Dunlea's compositions and arrangements have been performed by The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, Hothouse Big band, Crisis Point Big Band, Larry McKenna, Tony Miceli, Stan Sulzmann, Julien Seigel, Cathal Coughlan, Camille O' Sullivan, Dana Masters, Gareth Dunlop, Niall McCabe, Laoise Leahy, Anna Mitchell, Jack O'Rourke,Brian Deady, The Frank & Walters, Band of An Garda Siochana, Defence Forces Bands-Ireland, Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra & CSM Wind Ensemble. He has also written/arranged for countless theatre productions, groups and recording artists including Mick Flannery's two number 1 albums - "Red To Blue" (2012 EMI records) & By The Rule (2014 EMI Records)
