BBC Work Experience Opportunities in London within Radio

If you’re interested in Radio Production, Drama, Factual & Entertainment and getting some great practical experience on your CV, you’ve come to the right place.

The BBC is responsible for all the BBC’s national radio networks and for the production of most of the classical and popular music across them including Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Asian Network and Radio 3.

Role Responsibility

Every placement is different, but your Work Experience will give you a good all round overview of Radio across music, news, debate and entertainment. Our aim is for you to get an introduction to how local, national and international programmes are produced from beginning to end. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air and understand the production processes.

During your online application, you will have the opportunity to choose your placement and tell us about the things you’re really interested in.

We work at a fast pace. So you’ll need to be enthusiastic and motivated to keep up.

We take our jobs seriously and really enjoy what we do. If you’re passionate about Radio and are prepared to work hard, ask lots of questions and contribute ideas, you’ll fit right in.

Background/Experience

You don’t need a media qualification to apply. You just need to be able to show us that you’re passionate about Radio and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas:

Factual Central Planning - Research/Runner - Radio & Music (over 18’s only)

You will get the opportunity to work with the planning unit research team to generate and administrate items for daily and weekly network radio output; assisting in some paperwork and undertaking research for programmes such as Woman’s Hour, Midweek and Front Row. You may also get to act as an occasional runner to meet and greet guests.

Factual Production Runner - Radio & Music (over 18’s only)

This is an opportunity to work in the Factual programme making area - in particular on two of the department’s daily live programmes, Woman’s Hour and Outlook, and its weekly programmes The Media Show and Loose Ends. You will get an overall insight into how radio productions are put together whilst actively taking part behind the scenes. An interest in speech radio is an advantage.

Radio 1 & 1xtra (open to applicants 14 and over)

You will get to experience an all round overview of the department, working with a number of different teams across the network and involvement in idea generation and research.

Radio 2 (Western House - November & December - over 18’s only)

Radio 2 is offering the chance to gain valuable experience in a broadcasting environment to those who show the right spark and enthusiasm. You’ll work on the biggest radio station in Europe in either the Morning teams that produce the early breakfast, breakfast & morning shows (Oct 27th to Nov 21st or Nov 24th to Dec 19th ), or with the Jeremy Vine programme team (Sept 29th to Oct 24th ).  Each programme area offers different but equally important lessons in professional radio production. You will need to be available every week day for 4 weeks.

Radio 3 (November & December - over 18’s only)

You will gain an insight into how radio productions are created plus hands-on experience behind the scenes from attending live studios, location broadcasts, recording/editing sessions and general admin.

Radio 6 Music (November & December - over 18’s only)

This is an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a live broadcasting environment to those who show the right spark and enthusiasm. You’ll either work alongside the programme team on Steve Lamacq’s drivetime slot (27 October - 21 November) or Shaun Keaveny’s Breakfast Show (24 November - 19 December), each programme offers different but equally important lessons in professional radio production. You will need to be available every weekday for 4 weeks. This is not a placement for those who wish to gain on- air or presenting experience.

Radio Drama London – Books Unit (over 18’s only)

The Books Unit makes single-voice readings for slots such as for Book at Bedtime, Book of the Week, and The Essay as well as running Radio 4’s Open Book and Book Club, and World Service’s World Book Club.   Placements run for up to four weeks and offer you an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the work of the team by researching and evaluating texts, and working with scripts. Time will be set aside for you to attend a radio recording. An informed interest in the world of books and literature and listening to speech radio is helpful.

Radio Drama London (over 18’s only)

Radio Drama London produces single plays, series and serials featuring new contemporary writing, dramatisations and classic texts – chiefly for Radio 4 and Radio 3.  Placements can be two to four weeks depending on the project’s length. They offer you an opportunity to make a real contribution behind the scenes while gaining insight into how radio dramas are put together.  An interest in literature and listening to audio drama is helpful
