*Deadline Extended* Mentoring Scheme for Writers About Music in Galway City and County

Monday, 14 January 2019, 5.00pm

The Journal of Music, in partnership with Galway City Council and Galway County Council, is delighted to announce (19 November 2018) the return of our exciting mentoring scheme to encourage the next generation of writers about music in the west of Ireland. The deadline for applications is Monday 14 January 2019. Email submissions [at] journalofmusic.com for a PDF with full details.

There are seven places available this year, five for writers based in Galway City and two for writers in County Galway.

Over twelve months, the editorial team of the Journal of Music will work with the seven writers, developing their writing about music and working towards publication.

Fourth scheme
This is the fourth such scheme that the Journal of Music has launched, following successful programmes in Galway City and County Clare in 2017, supported by the arts offices of Galway City Council and Clare County Council, and Northern Ireland in 2018, supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. To date, 20 reviews have been published under these schemes, expanding the Journal of Music’s coverage in these areas and broadening its pool of writers.

The purpose of the Galway City and Galway County scheme is to build long-lasting relationships with writers and develop the Journal of Music’s coverage of music in the west.

Commenting on the scheme, James Harrold, Arts Officer, Galway City Council, said:

Galway City Arts Office is thrilled to partner again with the Journal of Music on this project. Last year’s first venture into the area was amongst the most interesting and successful programmes we worked on in years. We have received such positive feedback, so many enquiries about another round of engagement, that we are delighted to embark again on these music writing mentorships. In a city that holds the artform close to its heart, that knows and loves the great music makers and that enjoys sublime programming across the genres, venues, festivals and communities it is incredibly valuable to offer the Journal of Music’s unequalled opportunities in the art of music writing.

For the first time, the Journal of Music is opening up the opportunity to writers in County Galway also, thanks to support from the Galway County Arts Office. Sharon O’Grady, Galway County Arts Officer, commented:

Galway County Arts Office is delighted to join forces with the Journal of Music and Galway City Arts Office to offer two County Galway writers an opportunity to take part in this successful music writer mentoring scheme. This unique 12-month programme will not only develop long-lasting relationships with writers, it will also increase coverage of music events in County Galway and aligns with the arts office’s aim to support local musicians, bands and artists working in the county.

Toner Quinn, Editor of the Journal of Music, added:

At the JM, we are passionate about developing the ecology around music in Ireland. Having the opportunity to work with emerging writers in Galway not only expands the pool of writing talent available to us, but also helps us explore new scenes and sounds. This is an exciting time for music in Galway, with the launch of NUI Galway’s first music degree this year and the vibrancy of the live music scene. We look forward to reading the submissions.
