Leader of the Orchestra

Applications are being sought from suitable qualified applicants for the position of Leader before January 31st 2019. A limited number of audition and/or trial periods will be offered with the Orchestra from May 2019 onwards. 

The leader of the Hallé Orchestra will have those duties and responsibilities that are customarily associated with the position of Leader of the Orchestra and it is anticipated that they will lead 70% of the Orchestra’s work. These in particular will include, but not be limited to:

  • Leading the Orchestra during rehearsals and performances for concerts, live relays and recordings for radio, television and all electronic media
  • Assisting and advising both the Music Director and the Chief Executive as required in connection with musical matters relating to the Orchestra including, but not limited to, auditions of players, seating of the 1st violin section, assessment of players, assessment of guest conductors and artists and other general musical matters
  • Directing the Orchestra or a section of the Orchestra for rehearsals and/or performances. These duties will only be scheduled with the prior agreement of the Leader and, for performances, on payment of additional fees separately agreed with the Hallé
  • The Leader has overall responsibility for orchestral discipline whilst the Orchestra is in rehearsal or performance
