Icarus And Other Works

Icarus And Other Works

Saturday, 25 March 2017, 8.00pm

Colin Reid in association with The Ulster Youth Orchestra presents Icarus and Schizm and Fugue.

Icarus was written as a commission for the Festival Celtic Connections in 1999, and explores themes of flight and the sometimes deleterious human relationship with technology. Originally scored for string quartet and guitar it is reset and re-scored here for guitar and 9 members of the Ulster Youth Orchestra.

Schizm and Fugue is a new work presenting responses to the events of the world since 2001. It traverses the human journey, the cycle of life, death and re-birth that occurs in the course of a single lifetime. Fugue is used here in the sense of abandonment of identity rather than the musical form.

Colin Reid is a guitarist and composer from Belfast. He has toured extensively and worked at various times with Bert Jansch, Eddi Reader and Stephen Rea. To date he has recorded five studio albums to critical acclaim, and in recent years scored for theatre, dance and film.

The Ulster Youth Orchestra was established in 1993 and since then has become a vibrant and creative force in the musical life of Northern Ireland. Young players, aged 14-23, from all of Northern Ireland’s community backgrounds develop their musical talents in a creative, nurturing and inclusive environment, tutored by highly skilled professional musicians and under the direction of internationally celebrated conductors.
