FairPlé @ Women's Work: Doing It Yourself - artist development workshop

FairPlé @ Women's Work: Doing It Yourself - artist development workshop

Friday, 7 June 2019, 11.30pm

Supported and funded by Help Musicians Northern Ireland through the Women in Music Fund and part of the Women's Work Festival 2019.

Doing it Yourself: being a self-sufficient female musician in Irish trad/folk without burning out, with Inni-K (Eithne Ní Catháin) and Julie Hough (HAVVK).

This workshop is an opportunity to discuss how to develop a career in Irish folk/trad music and how to look after yourself in the process. The session will be an intimate forum for asking two experienced female musicians about how they have pursued their own careers and to discuss the opportunities for and obstacles facing women in the music industry. The discussion will be driven by participants: anything from how to organise gigs/work with promoters/negotiate fees/arrange recording sessions to understanding what promoters and managers do. Attendees will be given contact details on registration and can send in suggested discussion questions and themes, so that the workshop is as relevant as possible to those in the room.

The workshop is particularly aimed at those who are in the early stage of their career and those returning to music after a break, but is open to people at any stage of their career.

The facilitators:

Named by RTÉ.ie as one of ten fierce women defining Irish culture, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Inni-K has received consistent praise for her fresh style of indie-folk. Inni-K's music draws on her extensive background in folk and traditional Irish music, even as she ventures into new musical territories. Her music combines ethereal vocals with deft musicianship, evocative lyrics (bilingual at times), and a unique approach to song-writing.

Julie Hough is co-founder of independent label, Veta Records (HAVVK, Maria Kelly, DYVR and Sive), co-founder of DIY artists’ platform, SelfMade, and frontwoman and bassist with HAVVK. SelfMade’s mission is to celebrate the work of DIY musicians by providing a platform for independent musicians to learn and skill-share; creating opportunities for networking, community connections, collaboration, and exposure; and taking affirmative action to highlight and correct the underrepresentation of women in music.
