Catherine Leonard, violin / Hugh Tinney, piano – Sunday Matinee Series

The Leonard-Tinney Duo National Concert Hall International Series – Sunday Matinee Series

“Also totally absorbing were the performances of Lutoslawski, Beethoven and Ravel by violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney (at West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2012).  The music just flowed from their fingers like a force of nature, as it if couldn’t have been shaped or projected in any superior way”  Michael Dervan, Irish Times, July 2012.

Violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney will perform Beethoven’s 10 Sonatas for Violin and Piano in the National Concert Hall at 3.00pm on Sundays 27th April, 11 May and 25 May.  This matinee series is part of the NCH International Concert Series and the culmination of three years of intensive engagement with and performances of the sonatas by the Duo.

In 2007 the Leonard-Tinney Duo recorded Beethoven’s “Spring” and “Kreutzer” sonatas for the RTE Lyric FM label. The Journal of Music in Ireland commented “Especially striking about the performances on this highly attractive disc is the beguiling intimacy, quiet authority, meticulous attention to detail and carefully measured charm that Leonard and Tinney bring to bear throughout.” In spring 2010, the Duo performed to great acclaim on a Camerata Pacifica tour of Los Angeles and the U.S. West Coast.  “Empathetic, collective poise and personality were evident here…” (Santa Barbara News Press).

In the intervening years all the sonatas have been performed as part of concert tours around Ireland. Demonstrating their affinity with Beethoven’s works, Catherine and Hugh opened the first Westport Festival of Chamber Music iin 2013 with the “Spring” sonata. The Duo are artistic directors of the Westport festival and will open the 2014 festival in September with a Beethoven sonata, this time No.6, before a week-end of chamber music with their international guests in the scenic and colourful location of Westport, nestling in Clew Bay, with Westport House and Holy Trinity Church providing ideal settings.

The Duo have been invited to give a recital in the Wigmore Hall, London, in July.  Both Catherine Leonard and Hugh Tinney have continuing careers in Ireland and abroad as soloists and in chamber music ensembles.   Next November they have an Irish tour with UK cellist Guy Johnston.

Tickets at €25 per concert are available on www.nch.ie and from the NCH Box Office 01 417 0000.
