A modern phenomenon hailed by The Washington Post as ‘one of the most brilliant violinists you’ll ever hear’, Maxim Vengerov returns to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for a highly anticipated performance of Bach and Dvořák, with Vengerov in the dual roles of violinist and conductor.

There is simply no-one to compare with Vengerov, ‘one of the most revered performers around’ (The Scotsman) whose ‘technical wizardry is accompanied by a big dose of heart’. Australian magazine Scenestr calls him ‘the real deal, a genuine superstar who can deliver the goods on any stage you care to mention’.

Come and find out for yourself what a bona fide superstar talent can do with a Stradivarius violin in three exquisite works by the master of the baroque: JS Bach.

The ‘Double’ Concerto for Two Violins is like two golden threads of sugar spun together with gossamer delicacy. His buoyant A minor Violin Concerto is a thing of bright, brilliant wonder like sunlight dancing on the sea, the Concerto for Violin and Oboe casts a hypnotic spell with its gentle blending of two instrumental voices into a soft, serene dialogue. Just don’t let it lull you into sleep or you’ll miss the dazzling finale.

After the interval Vengerov takes to the podium to conduct one of classical music’s greatest treasures: Dvořák’s masterpiece New World Symphony. Taken by astronaut Neil Armstrong to the Moon on board Apollo 11, it is a glorious, tune-filled hymnal to America’s spirit and soul with an achingly beautiful melody at its heart, dram and gorgeous colour.

Presented by RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
