Guinness Choir Announces Summer Concert Date - Joseph Haydn’s ‘The Seasons’

The Guinness Choir, one of Ireland’s most highly-respected choral societies, has announced the details of its upcoming concert in the RDS Concert Hall on Saturday the 27th of May. Directed by David Milne, Joseph Haydn’s ‘The Seasons’ promises to be the perfect prelude to the summer season.

The choir will be joined on the night by its orchestra and soprano - Rachel Croash, tenor - Andrew Boushell and bass - Simon Bailey.

An oratorio, ‘The Seasons’ was first performed in 1801. Haydn wrote the work spurred on by the success of ‘The Creation’, which was very popular and was performed all over Europe.

Franz Joseph Haydn

Franz Joseph Haydn(1732 – 31 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the piano trio and his contributions to musical form have earned him the epithets ‘Father of the Symphony’ and ‘Father of the String Quartet’. He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a teacher of Beethoven, and the older brother of composer Michael Haydn. For much of his long career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe.

This is the second time the Guinness Choir has performed The Seasons. Famous Irish Times critic Charles Acton praised the choir’s performance in 1976.

About the Soloists:

Andrew Boushell, Tenor

Andrew Boushell recently completed the Opera Works programme at English National Opera. This was preceded by an opera performance diploma at the Operastudio Vlaanderen, Belgium. He is also a graduate of the Royal College Music and is an honours graduate of the BMus course at the D.I.T Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin. His previous work with the Guinness Choir includes Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’, Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Puccini’s ‘Messa Di Gloria’ and Elgar’s ‘The Apostles’.

Rachel Croash, Soprano

Dublin Soprano Rachel Croash is a graduate of Maynooth University, The Royal Irish Academy of Music and is an alumni of the Opera Theatre Company HUB Artist Programme. In 2015 Rachel was awarded both the Wexford Festival Opera Aria Friends Award and WFO & PwC Emerging Artist Bursaries. Operatic roles include as Fiordiligi in ‘Così fan tutte’, Serafina in ‘Il Campanello’; Reneé in ‘Koanga’ and Annina in ‘La Traviata’ at the Wexford Festival Opera.

Simon Bailey, Bass

Simon Bailey has received much praise for his interpretations of a diverse and eclectic range of over 100 principal roles and repertoire. A choral scholarship at Clare College, Cambridge preceded postgraduate study at the RNCM Manchester with Neil Howlett as a Peter Moore’s Foundation scholar, and at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan. His roles include the title role in Mozart’s ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ at Teatro alla Scala; Méphistophélès in Terry Gilliam’s production of Berlioz’s ‘The Damnation of Faust’ in Antwerp; Achilla in ‘Giulio Cesare’ in Frankfurt and Lille and Don Bartolo ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’.

Honorary Patronage

The Choir is also delighted to announce that the Rt Hon Earl of Iveagh has become the Guinness Choir’s Honorary Patron, reflecting his family’s respect and admiration for the choir for over sixty years.
