Work Experience Opportunities in London within Radio

The BBC is offering work experience opportunities in London within radio

Every placement is different, but the work experience will give you a good all round overview of Radio across music, news, debate and entertainment. The BBC aims to give you an introduction on how local, national and international programmes are produced from beginning to end. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air, and understand the production processes used in areas of Drama and Entertainment.

Placements are available in the following areas:

Factual Central Planning Radio & Music (over 18)
You will gain an over view of and experience in the Central Planning Unit research team who generate daily and weekly network radio output. You will assist with some paperwork and undertake some research for programmes such as Womans Hour and Loose Ends; you will also act as an occasional runner to meet and greet guests. Knowledge, awareness and most of all enjoyment of R4s daytime output will be a real advantage.

Asian Network (open to applicants 16 and over)
Asian Network is one of the BBCs digital stations, Home to presenters/DJs such as Tommy Sandhu, Noreen Khan and Punjabi Hit Squad. This placement will provide a week-long insight into Asian Network production. You will have a chance to contribute to research and brainstorms and attend key Asian Network meetings. Asian Network is looking for people who can prove that they are passionate about radio. 

Radio 1 (open to applicants 16 and over)
BBC Radio 1 is the UK’s biggest youth radio station, home to presenters such as Nick Grimshaw, Clara Amfo and Greg James and specialist genres such as dance and rock. It’s an opportunity to get a week-long overview of Radio 1 and depending on what you are interested in, that could include radio programmes, social media, marketing or Radio 1 iplayer. You will have a chance to contribute to research and brainstorms and to attend key Radio 1 meetings. 

Radio 1Xtra (open to applicants 16 and over)
Radio 1Xtra is the BBCs digital youth radio station, specialising in Hip Hop, Grime, R&B and Afrobeats and home to DJs such as Charlie Sloth, Mistajam and A.Dot. This placement will provide a week-long overview of Radio 1Xtra, and depending on what you are interested in, can include time with on air programmes to online, marketing to visualisation. You will have a chance to contribute to research and brainstorms and to attend key Radio 1Xtra meetings. 

Radio 2 - Jeremy Vine (Wogan House over 18)
If you want to find out how you combine News, with audiences and Music, the Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2 is the place to come. Here, under the guidance of a programme producer you will learn how to put together a radio programme, how to write programme briefs and what the show is looking for when audience members call the show

Radio 2- Weekday Daytime Programmes (Wogan House Over 18)
On this placement youll gain work experience alongside various weekday daytime programmes such as Ken Bruce, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo. Youllbe guided by Producers and Assistant Producers, learn how they prepare and produce live shows, and will get a chance to try certain production tasks such as writing guest notes. Youll also have the opportunity to sit in on a couple of live studio broadcasts and see how these are put together from start to finish.

Radio 2 Contains Strong Language Project - (Wogan House September only Over 18)
You’ll gain experience alongside BBC Radio 2 programmes working on a project called Contains Strong Language which is a new national four-day, spoken word and poetry festival taking place from September 28th to October 1st in Hull. You will be based in London for the two weeks watching how Producers and Assistant Producers prepare for an important Outside Broadcast. You’ll also get the chance to sit in on a couple of live studio broadcasts and see how shows are put together from start to finish.
