The BBC is offering work experience opportunities in regional stations within radio

Every placement is different, but the work experience will give you a good all round overview of Radio across music, news, debate and entertainment. The BBC aims to give you an introduction on how local, national and international programmes are produced from beginning to end. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air, and understand the production processes used in areas of Drama and Entertainment.

Placements are available in the following areas:

Radio Drama – ‘The Archers’ - Birmingham (open to applicants 16 and over)
The successful applicant will be a keen listener of The Archers. This is an opportunity to be mentored by a specialist Production Management team in all aspects of the support work that they do, from researching storylines, writing programme synopses, completing programme paperwork, contracting talent, to observing a studio record.

Radio Drama - ‘Home Front’ - Birmingham (open to applicants 16 and over)
If you love listening to Radio Drama and are interested in the country’s history maybe this is the placement for you? A specially commissioned original drama is the spine of the Radio 4 offer to mark the centenary of World War One, with Home Front which started in August 2014. This is an exciting drama serial, unprecedented in scale with nearly 600 episodes between 2014 and 2018, each around 12 minutes long. This is an opportunity to be mentored by a specialist team in all aspects of production support work that they do from engaging in research, contracting talent, to timing the takes in studio.

Radio Beds, Herts & Bucks, Three Countries Radio (over 18)
The successful candidate will gain an opportunity to initiate and produce, as part of a team, a wide variety of news and current affairs material for Radio from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. You will work alongside different teams on the radio station booking guests, writing briefs and helping in the studio. You may help with reporters covering stories and conduct recorded vox pops.

Radio Berkshire (over 18)
You’ll have the opportunity to; work closely with all programme teams, set up interviews, record interviews, edit audio, write cues and general programme production tasks. Candidates are expected to clearly demonstrate a commitment to working within the broadcast industry in their applications.

Radio Cambridge (over 18)
You will gain experience with one of the many programme teams on station assisting with a number of key areas depending on whether your interests lie in News or General programmes. You could be recording vox pops and setting up interviews to taking calls from listeners and meet and greeting studio guests

Radio Cumbria (over 18)
Radio Cumbria provides an insight into researching, preparing and maybe reporting on a variety of news and programme stories.

Radio Derby (over 18)
BBC Radio Derby has two types of work experience available:
News and sport - you’ll become a member of the newsroom for the duration of your placement.
Programmes - you’ll spend your time working on the production of one of Radio Derby’s daytime programmes. 

Radio Devon (over 18)
Work Experience with BBC Radio Devon will give you the chance to work closely with both the Radio Station and teams from across the multi-media newsroom. Candidates are expected to clearly demonstrate a commitment to working within the broadcast industry in their applications and will be especially interested in journalism candidates

BBC Essex (over 18)
Get an opportunity to overview BBC Essex’s news and programme operations. Your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks.

Radio Gloucestershire (August & September only - over 18)
The successful candidate will spend two weeks getting involved with all aspects of working in the news room. You’ll be hands on – researching stories, recording vox pops, setting up guests and learning how programmes are put together. The opportunity is suitable for individuals who can demonstrate an active interest in broadcast journalism to gain further practical experience. Candidates should also have a keen interest in Radio Production

Radio Guernsey (September only - over 18)
Radio Guernsey provides an opportunity to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local radio, television and online.

Radio Jersey - Channel Islands (over 18)
This placement is aimed at those students who have an interest in multimedia. Successful candidates may have a chance to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local television, radio and online. The States of Jersey insist candidates must be “entitled” to live and work in Jersey and/or have strong family connections with the island.

Radio Leeds (over 18)
As a busy BBC local radio station, Radio Leeds broadcast the news and stories that matter to listeners across West Yorkshire. Watch a presenter at work, join the daily news meeting, shadow a reporter out on a story, help produce a show and assist the BBC Radio Leeds journalists setting up guests, recording and editing audio, researching stories or writing scripts.

Radio Lincolnshire (over 18)
The placement will provide the successful candidate with an insight into how local stories are sourced and how they make it onto air. Candidates will be able to work alongside various weekday programme teams; learn how to use recording equipment, editing software, see how programmes are outputted and shadow a selection of reporters. This placement covers news and programmes only and not music production or presentation.

Radio Manchester (over 18)
You will be paired with one of the many programme teams on station assisting with a number of key areas depending on whether your interests lie in News or General programmes. You could be recording vox pops and setting up interviews to taking calls from listeners and meet and greeting studio guests.

Radio Merseyside (over 18)
In a fast moving and exciting working environment, the placement will have the opportunity to shadow and work with news and programme teams doing basic research, taking phone calls, developing interviewing skills and doing basic editing. There may also be the possibility of making content for social media.

Radio Newcastle (July only – over 18)
BBC Newcastle broadcasts to one of the most diverse areas in England ranging from the busy metropolitan cities of Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham, to some of the least densely populated areas of the country in Northumberland and rural County Durham.

You will be given the opportunity to work with the various teams including News, Sport, and Music etc.  You could be setting up and recording interviews or helping prepare for future programmes or outside broadcasts.

Radio Northampton (over 18)
The placement at BBC Radio Northampton will provide the successful candidate with an insight into how local stories are sourced by journalists and how they make it to air. Candidates will work in the newsroom alongside various weekday programme teams and presenters; learn how to use recording equipment and editing software. They will see how programmes are prepared and then outputted; they will shadow reporters as they do live and pre-recorded interviews. This placement covers news and programmes ONLY and not music production or presentation.

Radio Nottingham (over 18)
You will spend your time with experienced journalists in the newsroom and get a close-up view about how Radio Nottingham’s popular Breakfast Show is put together. If you bring suitable ideas then Radio Nottingham will help you work on them and they may get on air’

Radio Oxford (over 18)
An opportunity to experience Radio Oxford’s news and programme operations, your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks in radio or digital content production, or research. Candidates should have an interest in local radio production and output.

BBC Introducing - Oxford (over 18)
Successful applicants will gain experience of working in a live music broadcasting environment over the course of three weeks, working on one week day and on a Saturday. You’ll work alongside the BBC Introducing in Oxford team and will spend time observing and shadowing production staff, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks. Candidates should have an interest in radio production and enjoy going to gigs in Oxfordshire and listening to local music.

Radio Stoke (1 week placement - Over 18)
You will get the opportunity to work across the schedules both in the studio and on location to provide an all-round experience of work on a local radio station

Radio Suffolk (over 18)
Experience an overview of local news journalism and radio programming involving observing and shadowing, plus the opportunity to record and edit pieces their own pieces.

Radio Sussex - Brighton (over 18)
BBC Sussex is pleased to offer placements at its Brighton headquarters, across a range of programmes, including the flagship Breakfast programme. You will get the chance to shadow presenters and producers, along with the bulletins team and Sussex reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (e.g. community radio).

Radio Surrey - Guildford (over 18)
BBC Surrey is pleased to offer placements to gain experience primarily with the flagship Breakfast Show that goes out each weekday morning from 6 until 9. You will get the chance to shadowpresenter and producers, along with the bulletins team and Surrey reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (e.g. community radio).

Radio Wiltshire (over 18)
You will have the opportunity to work with news or program teams in a busy local radio newsroom serving the county of Wiltshire. You will see how bulletins are compiled and be able to shadowreporters. You may even have the opportunity to produce your own audio for output on air under the guidance of BBC staff.
