Fidil & Solo

Aidan O’Donnell – fiddle/ Solo Cissokho – kora

Seckou Keita – percussion/ Ciaran Ó Maonaigh – fiddle

Irish music wears its globalism lightly, weaving itself into the fabric of music around the world, and it is eloquently demonstrated in this collaboration that embraces folk traditions from Ireland’s Northwest and West Africa.

The groundbreaking duo of young Irish fiddlers Aidan O’Donnell and Ciaran Ó Maonaigh are joined by seventh generation griot Solo Cissokho and his nephew Seckou Keita in this entertaining dialogue between Donegal and Senegal.

With their adventurous approach to the fiddle, coupled with the depth of lore and tunes of the Donegal tradition, Fidil are worthy talismen for a new Irish trad generation.

Solo is a master of the kora, the regal 22 stringed harp with its beautiful cascades of rippling notes and addictive West African grooves, and Seckou brings an irresistible rhythmic accent with Senegalese percussion of djembe and calabash.

What started life as an impromptu encounter at Africa Day in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens, has grown organically into a vivid new chapter in Irish music and its capacity for dialogue, with  stunning performances at Celtic Connections, NCH, Temple Bar Trad Fest, Kilkenny Arts Festival and Earagail Festival.
