Producer

Monday, 1 September 2014, 5.00pm

A rare opportunity has arisen to join the award-winning team at Classic FM, responsible for producing content for the world’s largest classical music radio station.

For this particular role, we’re very much looking for a classical music expert.  You’ll also have a love of radio, of course – and experience of broadcasting would be a huge advantage.  But for this position, you’ll be programming classical music every day, working on a range of shows – anything from our nightly concert to commercial radio’s biggest breakfast show.  So it’s essential that you love, live and breathe classical music.

What we expect from you:

•A demonstrably deep knowledge of classical music.  It’s very likely that you’ll have a music degree; if you don’t, you’ll still be able to show you have an exceptional and very credible understanding of classical music.  But you won’t live in some kind of classical music bubble, with no appreciation for what happens outside that world.  We want someone who understands the relevance of classical music to the lives of ordinary people – not someone who spends every evening in a concert hall but doesn’t know how to relate to the average Classic FM listener.

•A clear understanding of where Classic FM sits within the UK media landscape.

•The flair, skill and passion required to create fantastic programmes, with a compelling mix of music which keeps our listeners with Classic FM for as long as possible.

•The wisdom to know exactly what appeals to an ABC1, 35+ audience.

•Knowledge and experience of radio programming will place you at a distinct advantage.  To be clear, though: first and foremost, we’re not looking for someone with bags of radio experience but only a first-base knowledge of classical music.  We’re after an outstanding individual who has a deep and genuine passion for classical music – and who can use that to great effect at Classic FM.

•The ability to multi-task.  That’s a skill you often see on job descriptions – but we really mean it.  We’re a small, dedicated team, with producers who are adept at spinning lots of plates.  One minute, you’ll be working on a live show; the next, you’ll need to put together an eye-catching series of concerts; and shortly after, you’ll find yourself working with our sales team to bring commercial ideas to life on-air.  You’ll thrive on the challenge of producing consistently excellent work, against tight deadlines – and you’ll also really know how to prioritise.

What you’ll be doing day-to-day:

•Putting together music content for a wide variety of programmes, broadcast across the station – ranging from genre-specific output (e.g. Saturday Night at the Movies) through to programmes presented by the likes of John Suchet, Myleene Klass and Alan Titchmarsh.

•Listening to new classical releases, and working with your programming colleagues to discern which ones should be included on-air.

•Coming up with inventive new ways to attract a wider audience to Classic FM.

•Assisting with other elements of the Classic FM brand, where appropriate – e.g. Classic FM Live, record releases, outside broadcasts, online content, social media, and plenty more besides.

•Responding to listener enquires about the programmes you produce.

•Broadly speaking, you won’t be spending your time holed away in a studio: you’ll be a very visible face at Classic FM – and will very often be the go-to person for all sorts of colleagues across Global, who are relying on your to bring your classical music expertise to bear in a very positive way.

Who you’ll work with:

•Classic FM’s Managing Editor (your line manager)

•Classic FM’s presenters and producers

•The editorial team for ClassicFM.com

The exact programmes you’ll be working on aren’t yet confirmed; the above examples just give you a flavour.  And the hours aren’t yet fixed, either: as a 24-hour medium, our people often work at different hours of the day.  But if you’re a classical music expert who wants to create programmes heard by millions of people every week, this role could well be for you.
