Alfred Brendel does not believe that the merits of an artist can be explained or illuminated by his private life. He is never going to write an autobiography and confesses that, to him, there are many things a great deal more intriguing than his own private persona. The focus of this lecture is therefore on musical matters, on Brendel’s development as a pianist and writer, and on his place within a changing musical world.
