Cataloguers (London & Edinburgh)

Cataloguers (London & Edinburgh)

Friday, 8 July 2016, 12.00pm

The Royal College of Music (RCM) is to create the largest virtual collection of historically significant musical instruments in the UK in major partnership with the Royal Academy of Music, the Horniman Museum & Gardens, and University of Edinburgh. This will enable the general public to explore individual instruments held in more than 100 musical instrument collections in the UK.

The RCM is seeking to appoint two Cataloguers to assist in the implementation of the project – the Musical Instruments Interface for Museums and Collections (MINIM-UK: www.minim.ac.uk).

The primary goal of the project is to create an online database that is able to harvest data about the ca. 10,000 musical instruments already available in online catalogues, currently divided between the individual databases of the museums. The second phase of the project requires specialist cataloguers to travel and work in situ, and support collections in adding records to the interface. Two cataloguers will be appointed to travel to smaller collections throughout the UK to inspect and catalogue musical instruments, take appropriate photographs and, where possible, make audio and video recordings, to existing standards.

The role will require extensive travel and solo independent work – there are approximately 200 days of field work expected to be undertaken by each Cataloguer. Accordingly the appointees will require excellent organisation and communication skills, as well as the ability to work remotely.

Given the distribution of collections in the UK, one role will be based from London, and the other remotely in Edinburgh.
