Back by popular demand, Musical Adventures, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s fun concerts for children aged 8-12, presented by the acclaimed music animateur, presenter, broadcaster and general master of musical mayhem and lots of fun, Mr Tom Redmond!

This time, children are invited to take the adventure of a lifetime as, through the eyes of fantastic creatures, we explore the worlds of mystery and magic, of imagination and legend in music of drama and romance, energy and excitement, poetry and power drawn from the opera house, concert hall and cinema screen. Includes excerpts from The Magic FluteA Midsummer Night’s DreamThe FirebirdHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Jurassic Park. With Charleston Champions, a super song for all to sing, it will be a cracker! So shake up your jazz hands and make sure to check out the lyrics, vocal line and audio for Charleston Champions on the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s website page so you are fully prepared and able to fully participate.

Included in the ticket price will be programme notes for all children and teachers, and lesson plans for teachers, both of which will be given out at the concert.

Setting the scene is Mozart’s effervescent Overture to The Magic Flute. Bristling with colour and fantasy, fizzing with vitality, its giant, slithering snake hints at magical events to come. The midnight hour beckons in Mussorgsky’s ominous and wild Night on a Bald Mountain as phantoms, spirits and witches assemble to celebrate an ancient ritual. Revel in the wonder of movie maestro John Williams’ Fawkes The Phoenix from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – a glowing, fire-lit portrait of the legendary bird that gives birth to itself. The sprites and fairies of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream dance and dart around the mischievous Puck – naughtiest of all of the woodland’s little people – in an exhilarating Scherzo.

Listen out for the steady stomp of advancing dinosaurs in John Williams’ Jurassic Park, its optimistic nobility paying tribute to the magic of science as ancient creatures are brought back to majestic life. Mason Bates’ The A Bao A Qu is a slippery, sliding, insinuating depiction of a rejuvenating serpent’s life cycle as it is magically reborn. The Berceuse and Finale from Stravinsky’s The Firebird conjures the mythical, glowing creature at once a blessing and a curse to its owner with menace, mystery and a mighty ending of compelling orchestral grandeur.

Part of the fun will be the entire audience forming a massed choir to sing the fabulously uplifting Charleston Champions. It’s fun to listen to and to learn. So that all children can fully participate, the RTÉ NSO hopes that all students and teachers will come to the concert ready to sing as one voice. See the RTÉ NSO’s event page here.
