5 Must-Catch Culture Night Music Events

Culture Night takes place on 21 September, with venues across the country hosting free tours, performances, and talks. Here’s five music events to check out:

Kevin Murphy/Mary Barnecutt
7pm, Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh

Two composer/cellists, Kevin Murphy of Slow Moving Clouds and Mary Barnecutt, will showcase their new collaborative project at Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre. The two will bring together their wealth of experience with traditional, experimental, indie and contemporary music in an intimate performance.

That’s Life – Gamelan Music Project
6pm, Nun’s Island, Galway

That’s Life, a Galway-based disability arts programme will give performances and a workshop of their gamelan project with leader Aengus Hackett. They will perform works in progress in two performances, plus the public can learn about the instruments in an open workshop.

Quiet Music Ensemble: sonic pollinators
8.30pm, Birr Theatre, Birr

Experimental music ensemble Quiet Music Ensemble will perform Karen Power’s sonic pollinators, a work based on recordings of bees, plants and their habitats made last year in Offaly.

Aisteach
6pm, The Model, Sligo

Composer/curator Jennifer Walshe will personally guide a tour through her Aisteach exhibition for Culture Night, giving unique insight into the stories behind its art, music and personalities. The exhibition will be open for free from 5–10pm. Read our review of the exhibition and The Worlding installation here.

New Music Dublin: Defrosted

The remounted events from March’s cancelled festival will kick off with free late concert from RTÉ Contempo Quartet and the finale of the Contemporary Music Centre and Chamber Choir Ireland’s ‘Composers in the Classroom project. Also taking place at the National Concert Hall will be gamelan and percussion workshops, a pop-up choir and a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra.
