Liz Doherty and Kieran Hanrahan Appointed to Culture Ireland Committee

Committee to be chaired by Kevin Rafter of DCU.

Musicians Liz Doherty and Kieran Hanrahan have been appointed to the Culture Ireland Expert Advisory Committee.

Doherty is a fiddle-player and lecturer in Traditional Music at Ulster University, and Kieran Hanrahan is a banjo-player, RTÉ Radio 1 presenter and Artistic Director of Temple Bar Tradfest.

Kevin Rafter, Head of the School of Communications at Dublin City University, has been appointed as Chair.

Culture Ireland promotes Irish arts worldwide and has three funding deadlines per year. It received €4 million in funding from the Government for 2018.

The other members of the Advisory Committee are newly appointed Somhairle MacConghail, Arts Officer of Monaghan County Council, and re-appointed members Maureen Kennelly, Director of Poetry Ireland, and Josephine Kelliher, curator and producer in visual arts. Representatives from the Departments of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Arts Council, the IDA, Tourism Ireland and the Irish Film Board will also serve on the Committee.

Announcing the new Committee, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan said:

The Expert Advisory plays a key role directing the implementation of Culture Ireland’s strategy to maximise the cultural impact of the Government’s international promotion strategy and generate new career opportunities globally for Irish artists.
